Non-Profit Spotlight: Compassion Over Killing

Anyone who has spent time with farmed animals knows that
they are intelligent, social and sentient individuals. Pigs can learn tricks,
recognize their own name, and have been shown to be smarter than dogs. Cows have
best friends and get stressed when separated. Chickens have unique
personalities and can remember the faces of more than 100 other birds.
Sadly, without adequate laws to protect them, these amazing
animals are forced to endure horrific abuses on factory farms, and in the U.S. alone, over
9 billion birds, pigs, and cows are
killed each year for food. Compassion Over Killing
is committed to exposing these injustices and empowering others to stand up for
animals every time they sit down to eat simply by choosing vegetarian foods.
Hidden Cameras: Our
eye-opening undercover investigations shine
a bright light on the cruelties kept hidden behind the closed doors of animal
agribusiness. . Our video exposes have
led to factory farm shutdowns, animal cruelty charges, groundbreaking lawsuits,
and animal rescues. In addition, international media outlets have aired our
footage, exposing millions of people to the suffering forced upon these
animals.

In the Courtroom:
Our legal advocacy
program uses the legal system as a powerful tool to fight the systemic
injustices of factory farming, focusing on using existing criminal laws and
civil litigation to target large-scale animal cruelty on these factory farms.
Business
As Usual: Through our corporate campaigns, we’re
convincing major companies that vegan eating is not only on the rise, but it’s
the new business as usual. We’ve successfully persuaded Morningstar Farms, BOCA Foods, Quorn,
and Lightlife to significantly reduce or eliminate eggs from their
products. And after receiving thousands of comments from consumers through our
campaign website WeLoveSubway.com,
the the world’s largest
restaurant chain tested three vegan subs
in the Washington, D.C. market that were so popular, the stores all ran out
within a few short weeks.

Seeing an increasing
demand for vegan options, Subway tested three vegan subs in the Washington D.C.
market last summer.
Extending Our Reach:
Our vegetarian
outreach [EM1] brings
a message of compassion to consumers. Through our leafleting, public events,
and online advocacy, we empower individuals to make positive food choices that
benefit animals, the environment and their own health.

Last year,
Compassion Over Killing staff and volunteers distributed over 150,000 pieces of
pro-vegetarian literature.
